Education being the key to the development of human beings and the
nation is a very important apostolate in the Diocese of Hazaribag.
The Diocese lays great emphasis on education, because there are so
many people who are illiterate. There are many children, who do not
go to school or have no school to go to. Therefore, we have sought
and invited various religious Congregations and laity to take up
this educational work. The diocese has many Congregations and some
laity, running the schools according to their charisms.
To
obtain our common goal- the development of human beings according to
the values of Jesus Christ, we have a common vision, one mission and
the same objectives in the diocese. All groups, engaged in
educational work, have agreed to come together in an association
called, the Hazaribag Catholic Education Association. The
Association originated with the division of Daltonganj diocese. It
has its roots in the Catholic Christian Minority Board of Education,
Hazaribag –Palamau, which came into existence when a number of
Catholic educationists of Hazaribag- Palamau Districts, who shared
an educational vision and felt the need for unity and direction in
their apostolate, got together and set up an Educational Association
in the year 1981.
The Hazaribag Catholic Education Association
is an organ of Catholic Organizations which have established and
manage educational institutions in the Hazaribag Catholic Diocese,
which comprises the districts of Hazaribag, Ramgarh, Chatra, Koderma
and Bokaro. It is an Association in which all the managing bodies of
our schools meet together, with the aim of arriving at common
decisions, and managing their schools with a common vision. The
religious superiors, who have authority in their own schools in the
Diocese, agree in matters, which touch the educational work of the
whole Diocese, to exercise their authority over their schools not
individually, but in a corporate way, under the leadership of the
bishop. Since the aim of the Association is not absolute uniformity,
but arriving at common policies and guidelines about educational
matters, the managing body retains the freedom to pursue its own
specific educational orientation within the framework of the agreed
upon diocesan policy. In the implementation of this policy, the
freedom and initiatives of individual managing, bodies to experiment
in the search for more appropriate educational methods is always
respected.
The aim and objectives of the association are summarized as follows
- To determine common educational policies and philosophies;
-
To co-ordinate the Catholic educational apostolate within the
Diocese;
-
To set standards of professional excellence in the educational
institutions;
-
To foster Christian principles in the educational institutions;
-
To encourage any creative and innovative activity which looks to
the improvement of the Catholic Educational Institutions of the
Diocese
- To provide a forum for discussion of management problems;
-
To encourage cooperation and support of Government endeavors aimed
at educational Improvement;
- To help schools in their dealings with government;
-
To arrive at common policies in regard to minimum pay, service
conditions etc.
- To be informed of plans foe school expansion, building etc;
-
To arrange for regular meetings of Secretaries and heads of
schools;
-
To provide a domestic court of appeal in disciplinary matters;
-
To take steps to attain the above mentioned aims and objectives
through functions such as but not limited to the following;
- General body meetings of the Association;
-
Consultation within large or small groups to develop vision
statements, or overall, long term planning or co-operation and
support within common apostolate;
- In-service training;
-
Evaluation of the overall educational apostolate from to time;
- Cultural activities;
- Combined games programs
- Evaluation and inspection of schools.
The association coordinates the apostolate of twenty-four hostels,
forty primary schools, thirty-three middle schools, sixteen high
schools, five plus two schools, three women’s empowerment centers,
one Montessori school with a training school for the hearing
challenged, an institute imparting trade skills for drop-outs, two
open national schools offering high and plus two courses, and a
primary teachers education college. There are one thousand one
hundred trained teachers serving thirty-six thousand students,
(sixteen thousand seven hundred girls and nineteen thousand three
hundred boys) in our educational institutions. There is a research
center and a special team (Bare Foot Teachers Training Program)
engaged in uplifting the standard of teaching in our primary and
middle schools. Late Fr. Michael Eather, S.J. had researched the
effective teaching –learning process of village children and
produced mathematical and English textbooks for our village schools.
From the beginning of the Diocese, educational research has been at
the forefront of our educational apostolate and continues to be so.
Besides a flourishing faith formation program, linked to the basic
Christian community movement, an HIV / AIDS awareness program has
been initiated in all the school of the Diocese.

Holy Childhood Society is one of the Pontifical Mission Societies
which is active and functioning well in our Diocese. The main aim of
this Society is to animate the children (from the age of 6 - 14) to
grow in faith and become little missionaries of Jesus. In Hazaribag
diocese it works combined with the “Eucharistic Crusade” known as
the “Crusveer”. We have 21 units in the parishes and schools
comprising of 400 full-fledged Eucharistic crusaders with 40
animators and about 500 members as candidates. We conduct weekly
meetings, prayers and have once a month Holy Eucharist at the unit
levels. Once a year, annual “Rally” is organized where all the
children participate and utilize the occasion to present their
activities according to each year’s theme. Often the monthly
intention of the church and the Holy Father is taken as the theme of
the meeting and prayers are offered for the missionary intention of
the Holy Father.

Diocesan Catholic Sabha is an organization of Catholic men. They
have their annual General Body meeting around February-March in
consultation with the bishop. In the meeting they take up issues
connected with the society, religion, economic and politics. They
encourage Christian involvement for the solution of the problems.
They also encourage the laity regarding their role in the secular
field as Christian. Each parish has its own Catholic Sabha

Catholic Women of the diocese have organized themselves as Diocesan
Catholic Mahila Sangh. Executive committee members are elected by
the general body who meet once a year. All the members from
different parishes elect the central executive committee. In their
meeting they discuss problems concerning women, socio-economic
problems, political empowerment and religious and family issues. For
this year they have taken the theme ‘Christian families and
present-day problems’ for their discussion. Their cooperation in the
church is praiseworthy.
